Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Are you communists or hippies?
A: Absolutely not. Not only am I not a communist, I don’t want antiwar/antimilitarism people from the political left to join this group and argue against Troop Worshipers and war-mongers. I don’t want them here at all. This group can get pretty chaotic sometimes, and I don’t want it further polluted with communist boilerplate and nonsensical, anti-capitalist rhetoric.
As far as hippies go, there are quite a lot of people who are perceived by the mainstream as hippies, who are actually libertarian. In Keene, NH, there is a movement called Free Keene that is composed largely of people who are perceived to be hippies. I have nothing against them, obviously. Personally, I (Stephen – founder of the group) have never been confused for a hippie, since I usually wear overalls, workboots and a cowboy hat, drive a very large truck and smoke cigars.
Q: Why don’t you want anti-war leftists (communists, socialists, etc.) to join the group and debate against the Troop Worshipers with you?
A: It’s a two-part answer: 1) I am opposed to aggressive violence, and at the root of all socialist and communist programs and ideas is a threat of aggressive violence and 2) there are already many (perhaps dozens) of anti-war/anti-military Facebook groups operated and administered by pinkos. I thought it was high time for a group from a libertarian/anarcho-capitalist perspective.
Additionally, communists and socialists tend to oppose war and the military because they (wrongly) see it as an extension or logical conclusion of a capitalist economy, while libertarians and anarcho-capitalists oppose war and the military State because they (correctly) see it as anathema to capitalism.
Q: Are you Obama supporters.
A: Uh… no. Obama is every bit the warmonger George W. Bush was.
Q: In what way are the troops welfare whores?
A: There are two sectors of any modern economy: the productive sector and the parasitic sector. The productive sector is that sector of the economy wherein goods and services are traded on a voluntary, mutually beneficial basis and the parasitic sector is the sector that harvests wealth from the productive sector through coercion and threats of violence and redistributes that wealth to people and agencies who would not receive that money otherwise.
The military, along with welfare recipients, are part of that parasitic sector of the economy.
Another way of explaining it comes courtesy of Zach, one of our moderators:
“The military is a part of the COERCIVE sector of the economy as opposed to the voluntary sector. The military is just a wing of the state. The state is unable to produce anything so it thrives on seizing assets from the people it claims to rule. Thus while private citizens must make a living through voluntary exchange, the state is able to make a living through the seizure of other’s wealth. Consent doesn’t matter when the state is involved. Many of them will grant petty freedoms to people, like a freedom to say whatever they want, but any real freedom (like not supporting the state by not paying taxes) is outlawed. If I were to rob you, I would be recognized as a member of this coercive sector and rightfully imprisoned. However, there is a double standard in relations to the state.
“The military, being a wing of the state, is thus a coercive institution. This is not to say there is no place for soldiers in a voluntary society. There is no reason people couldn’t voluntarily pay soldiers to protect them from criminals or outside invaders in a free society. However the military, as it currently stands, just serves the best interests of the state. The military is funded by a criminal organization that thrives off of stealing from productive people. When welfare recipients are given stolen money, people tend to get pissed off. A lot of people get pissed off at government workers as well; it certainly isn’t hard to find people that don’t want their money going to politicians or bureaucrats. Yet the military conjures up feelings of hyperpatriotism and no one wants to say a bad word about them. Why not? If the government stealing from one group and giving to another is bad in one context, why does it become just in another context?”
Q: Why call them “whores”? Isn’t that just designed to anger them?
A: Admittedly, it’s not the most subtle way of stating the case, but it is an attention grabber. I doubt if this group would have nearly as many fans if it was called something like “The Troops Are Not Part of the Productive Sector of the Economy.” The hardest part about trying to engage in reasoned debate on this group is that very few Troop Worshipers can get past the fact that the title of this group is offensive to them. That’s not their fault.
Q: Why pick on the troops? Why not direct your ire at the real problem: the politicians in Washington who send them overseas to fight?
A: To paraphrase Zach, one of our moderators, what sense does it make to blame the people who create oppressive laws and murderous policies and then turn around and hold the people who actually execute the oppressive laws and murderous policies completely blameless?
The military is the enforcement arm of the monstrous United States government. If we are to be consistent, we must blame the government and the troops in the same breath.
That said, the object of the group isn’t necessarily to pick on the troops, but to tear away at the idea of troop-worship. The troops aren’t the target; the people who think the troops can do no wrong are the target.
Q: Isn’t it your view that all government employees are welfare whores? Why don’t you have groups dedicated to picking on employees of the EPA, OSHA, the FAA or any of the other alphabet soup agencies? Isn’t it inconsistent to just pick on the military? Doesn’t the fact that you are only picking on the military indicate that you have some personal issue with the military, that is neither related to nor inspired by your moral and philosophical objections to the government and the military?
A: Yes, it is my view that all government employees are welfare whores. The reason I don’t have groups dedicated to criticizing the employees of other government agencies (aside from my group, The Police Are Welfare Whores) is because life is short and the list of welfare whores is very long—and getting longer every day.
I created this group because it’s what I know: the military. But that’s not the only reason I created the group.
The other reason is that the average person does not lavish praise and virtual worship on EPA agents, or OSHA inspectors. There are no national holidays dedicated to honoring and showing appreciation for USPS mail clerks and no one will threaten you with death or injury if you say “fuck the TSA.” I could walk around town, unarmed, in complete confidence that I will be free from harassment and threats wearing a t-shirt that said “DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR GEOPHYSICISTS ARE WELFARE WHORES.” I could do it all day, every day, and never even receive a dirty look.
But if I wore a t-shirt that said the same thing about the troops, I would be spat upon, cursed at, threatened, injured and possibly killed. Why? Because there is not a cult built up around DOI geophysicists, however there is a cult built up around the troops. We are taught to believe that they are sacrificing their time, comfort, safety and even their very lives for our benefit—just like a messianic cult. They are treated with respect; they are beloved; they are honored; they are celebrated as heroes; they are practically sainted—or else.
If you sent two people into the city wearing two different shirts: one saying “Fuck the Troops” and the other saying “Fuck Jesus Christ,” which person would receive the most abuse? I would say the guy wearing the “fuck the troops” shirt. The Cult of the State, with its attendant ritual of Troop Worship is a religion that cannot be criticized or mocked. Not without consequences.
That’s why this group inspires so much rage on the part of troops and Troop Worshipers: because we are pissing on their religion. We are telling them to take their cult and shove it up their asses. We are not acolytes and parishioners of the Civic Religion of the State and that absolutely infuriates them.
Q: What have you ever done to serve your country? Were you ever in the military?
A: Yes, as I alluded to above, I (the creator of the group) am a 10 year military veteran (not counting reserve time) who served in the first Gulf War. However, this service cannot nor should not be confused with serving my country. I have served my country in various capacities—working for charitable organizations, for example—but when I was in the military, I served greasy politicians on behalf of the merchants of death who make up their true constituency.
Q: Don’t you think it’s hypocritical of you to be a military veteran and create a group such as this?
A: No.
Q: I disagree.
A: So?
Q: What branch(es) were you in? What was your MOS?
A: You already know too much about me as it is. I am not interested in divulging any more information than I already have.
Q: Are you an unemployed loser?
A: Loser, maybe. Unemployed? No.
Q: Why do you ban people for disagreeing with you, or people who have kicked your ass in a debate?
A: I have never done that, nor shall I ever.
Q: What sorts of things will you ban people for?
A: I will ban people who threaten violence against or wish death or injury upon others, who spam endlessly, who lie about others, or who seem to only be here to anger people (in other words, they don’t contribute in any meaningful way to the group). I also don’t tolerate overtly racist or homophobic speech or insults against people’s religion, culture or nationality. The rude “n” word will get you banned quick, as will any of the various pejorative terms for people of a homosexual persuasion.
It is important to note that in the last three days, as of this writing, I have banned 4 or 5 people who are against the troops and on ‘my side’ of the issue for violating some of the above mentioned infractions.
Q: Don’t you believe in freedom of speech? Why would you ban someone? Isn’t that a contradiction?
A: Facebook allows me to have property rights on this small speck of the their website. My property rights trump the free speech rights of the members of the group. You have the right to kick me out of your house—by force if necessary—if I stand in your kitchen saying things that you regard as rude. Likewise, I have the right to kick you out of this group if you say anything that I think is rude.
Q: The troops fought and died for your freedom to have this group and say these things.
A: Unless you can provide some examples of troops who died fighting the US government and it’s abbrogations of our freedoms, there is no reason for me to accept this platitude as true or factual. What living veteran has ever fought for my freedom of speech? Does bombing Somalia, Haiti, Grenada, Iraq, Yemen, Vietnam, Korea etc. give me freedom of speech? If so, in what way?
More importantly, historically the beloved and sainted troops have been used to take away freedom. Some examples include:
1) The house-to-house confiscation (theft) of peaceful, law-abiding gun owner’s weapons after Hurricane Katrina (yes, it’s true that it was mostly police involved, but the National Guard was involved as well).
2) The seizing (theft) of the steel mills by Truman.
3) The kidnapping and imprisonment of Japanese-Americans during World War 2
4) The seizing (theft) of the coal mines by Theodore Roosevelt
5) The confiscation (theft) of gold coins and bullion in 1933 under Franklin D. Roosevelt.
6) The oppression, abuse and murder of WW1 vets who were peacefully protesting in Washington DC over the failure of the government to live up to it’s promises.
There are many more examples, including infrequent squelching of peaceful protests by the military. The fact of the matter is that the military have often been used to take away freedoms.
Besides, if it is the job of the troops to protect liberty, why do we now have less liberty in the US than at any other time in our history, outside of the era of institutionalized chattel slavery? In other words, if it’s the job of the troops to protect freedom, why haven’t they done it? Do they just suck at it?
You can’t just assume that I agree with your unsubstantiated claim that the military provides me with freedom of speech. You cannot legitimately pretend that it’s a foregone conclusion. Prove it, or fuck off.
Q: If the troops are welfare whores, what do you do for a living?
A: It’s not your business, but even if I shoveled pig shit for a living, it would be a more noble profession than being a murderous, costumed goon for a thuggish, criminal gang writ large such as the US government.
Q: Why do you hate America?
A: I don’t hate America. I love America, which is exactly why I am so passionate about this issue. The militaristic United States Government is the greatest enemy of America, and is more of a danger to Americans than any foreign terrorist.
Q: If you don’t like living in this country, why don’t you go move to Russia, or China, or Cuba, or Iraq etc.?
A: In the original Terminator movie, when the dirty hotel manager asked the terminator if he had a dead cat in the room, the terminator’s computer suggested about a half dozen possible answers, all of which were appropriate. Likewise, there are several answers to this question/request/demand that are equally appropriate. They are:
1. No.
2. Why don’t you?
3. Do you realize that the supporters of the Crown in 18th century America said the same exact thing to the revolutionaries and their sympathizers? Free-minded people who call the regime what it is always elicit angry responses from the sheep and cows who are slaves to the system and worshipers of the State.
4. I can imagine one slave telling another slave that same thing on a 19th century plantation, though with a sort of sinister sarcasm in his voice.
There are a few more responses, but you get the idea.
Q: If you really believe in what you are saying here, why don’t you prove it by going to Iraq or Afghanistan and fighting against the soldiers you hate so much?
A: This was a real question by the way, that I have received twice so far in the life of this group. Here is my answer:
First of all, I don’t hate the troops. I pity them, just as I pity any cultist.
Secondly, this question is so incomprehensibly stupid, that I can’t even imagine how to answer it. As far as I can tell, it’s like me asking one of you “If you love the troops so much why don’t you blue flim-flam the crackity split and dash wc?”
Q: How does that tin-foil hat feel on your head?
A: I am not a conspiracy theorist in any sense of the word. I think that 19 pissed off and slightly crazed Muslims were behind 9/11; I think that Oswald acted alone; I don’t believe that there are aliens in a secret Army base in New Mexico; I am 100% certain that NASA astronauts walked on the moon in 1969.
