What Is The Gospel Of Christ? The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12)

“ I have decided to post on the Gospel of Christ. What exactly is the Gospel of Christ?  There are enough commentaries and books written on this that it would fill the library of Congress twice over, probably.  When I did a study on this, you would think it would be very simple, but man got involved, and there are volumes of written word on what these teachings mean.  Mathew chapter 5 starts with the beatitudes.  “Now when he saw the crowds, He went up on a mountainside and sat down.  His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them, saying”:

3Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness,

for they will be filled.

7Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy.

8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God.

10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

“I am of the mindset that these teachings of Jesus stand on their own, I don’t seek commentaries when I study God’s word, I seek the Holy Spirit.  Ocassionaly I will seek other places in the Bible where a term or word is used to see if I can find the meaning, if I get stumped, but basicly I rely on the Holy Spirit’s help and the rule “If it makes plain sense, no other sense is needed.”  Even Jesus’s parables become clear if you use this basic way to read the Bible.  God didn’t design his word to be confusing, or contradictory.  We fight it too hard, there is no reason to think there are hidden meanings.  Some prophetic works in the Bible like Daniel and Revelation may be sealed or hidden until the appropriate time.  But that’s the only hidden meanings in the Bible.”

“A few years ago, I was struggling with several passages in the Bible, and I asked God several times to reveal the hidden meaning to me.  I was a little distressed.  I even asked God if the Bible had been altered by men.  Well, one night I had a dream.  In this dream I was in a different place, with not many people.  I was riding a Bike and I didn’t recognize much, and I knew I was lost.  I finally saw a woman and a small boy. I went to ask the boy where I was, and where I could find help, and his mother ran up, jerked him behind her, and scolded him.  Saying your not suppose to talk to women without your father.  I begged her to help me, and as she walked away, she shouted back at me, “Go to the tomb, you’ll find help there.”  Well she might as well told me in Greek, because I didn’t have any idea what she was talking about.  I went on my way, riding and riding, until I finally came to a cave, and went in.  The people there were singing, and happy and they welcomed me with open arms, like I was long lost family.  I said where am I, and they said the Tomb.  I remember a peace and happiness washed over me, and then I woke up.  It didn’t take me too long to know what that dream meant.  Because the word the Tomb to me represented Jesus.  The tomb where Mary found it empty!  So I knew my answer!  When in doubt, I was to go to Jesus’s words, in the Bible and these would be the truth.  And I’ve applied this very technique to every question I’ve had, and whalllaa  there it is the meaning.  So I think I can pass my dream on to you, because you see, this is truly God’s words, and John tells us in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.

The Beatitudes is one of the most beautiful things Jesus taught.  Jesus taught many things that day in his sermon on the mount.  He taught:

1.  You are the salt of the earth.  But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?  It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.  You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill cannot be hidden!

2.  Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

3.  You know murder is wrong.  But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.

4.  Do not commit adultery.  But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  “He hits this one home with, if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out, and if your right hand causes you to sin cut it off. “  It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for our whole body to go to hell.  He uses that to hit home self-control.

5.Divorce is wrong except for marital unfaithfulness.

6.  Do not swear an oath at all, either by heaven for it is God’s throne or by the earth for it is his footstool…Simply let your yes be yes and your no, no.  anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

7.  If someone strikes you on the right cheek turn to him the other also.  And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.  If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him 2 miles.  Give to the one who asks and don’t turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

8.  Love your enemies

9.  Give to the needy, but do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men.

10. Pray not like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.  When you pray go into your room, and shut the door, and pray to your Father.  And when you pray do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.  This then is how you should pray.

“Our Father in Heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.

11.  When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting.  Put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen and your Father who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

12.  Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.  but store up for your selves treasures in heaven.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  No one can serve 2 masters.  Either he will hate the one and love the other or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve both God and Money.

13.  Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?…..  For the Pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.

14.Do not judge, or you too will be judged.  For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

15.  Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened….

16.  Enter through the narrow gate.  For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  but small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.

17.  Watch out for false prophets.  they come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.  by their fruit you will recognize them.   Not everyone who say’s to  me Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

18.  Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock.  But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.

When Jesus finished teaching, the people were amazed because He taught with authority and not as their teachers of the law.

You can read chapter 5, it’s amazing, or I have the audio of this.  Here

I struggle daily with sin, and compliance with the teachings of Jesus.  But once you invite him into your life, and surrender to His will, He will change you.  It might be a gradual change, but He will change you.  It’s a daily walk and struggle, but praise God, He will be there beside you, to guide you, help you and pick you up and dust you off if you fall.  The grace of our Lord and Savior is bountiful, and with repentance comes saving grace.  You will stumble from time to time, but as the prayer teaches us that He gave us to say:  forgive us our sins, as we forgive others who sin against us.  God Bless, and remember He’s coming again soon.

  1. Agreed….if we have ears to hear (as it is said in some places in scripture) then we can understand. I do find however that as an infant can not take in meat yet, that an immature or baby Christian cannot take in the meat of the Word either. It’s like if we gave an infant a piece of meat they’d lay there and suck on it…as they cannot take it in yet…so, the meat of the Word is essentially not yet clear to the spiritually immature. I remember when my brother was little, when people used to say that he did this and that when he was a baby he’d say, “I was never a baby!” Like it was a bad thing! Ha! So being immature is not a bad thing, it just means someone is not ‘there’ yet…and everyone started ‘there’.

    • Thanks for the link above, I had seen that story, a while back. But I re-blogged it. This is very relative to the end times. It clearly shows the mixing of religions and the falling away from our beliefs as Christians. The Israelites did the same thing in the Bible bringing down God’s judgement. King Solomon even erected shrines to other God’s for his wives, causing the kingdom to be divided on his death. How many more warnings do we need. We need to learn from the Old Testament. The Bible is plain… Be ye not unequally yoked! And to your other comment, yes, I forget in my zeal to warn that Paul warned about giving meat to early believers. I have to learn to balance that, it’s just that time is so short. But I will pray for guidance and direction, not meaning to push any away, but draw all to Christ. Thanks again.
