The Jot/Prophetic people in pathetic times

The occupant of the Oval Office’s assault on law abiding citizens to disarm America has brought a lot of debate from the Christian community. There is talk that Christians should not concern themselves with government and politics. Some want to debate whether Jesus would carry a gun. You name it. Fact is, there are so many interpretations of the Bible and so many opinions, offered by so many pastors, teachers, preachers, self proclaimed prophets and apostles that people are confused to the point that they cannot even make a decision to defend themselves or their families. How can we be a prophetic people when we live in such pathetic times?

I am a student of the Bible. I am not an expert. I study the Bible as much as I can. I also am a student of politics and government. I am not an expert. I study this as it relates to what I learn from the Bible. I have some very simple observations about government, politics and the Bible. The Bible has it all. There is nothing that you see today that you cannot find in the Bible. The reason we have so much confusion about how to behave as a Christian is that there are too many people taking the scriptures out of context to support their own idea of Christianity.  Certainly, the imperfection of man is a reflection of why this happens. Add in agenda and motive and these confusions become exponentially worse.

When YHVH through Moses led the Israelites to freedom from Egypt, He established a form of government by giving the law. It is found in Exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Government is established because of the imperfection of man. There must be a system to protect life, liberty and property from those who do not respect the welfare of their fellow man. By YHVH GOD given wisdom, Jethro, Moses’ Father in Law, suggested a representative means to fairly govern. Exodus 18:17-27, essentially saying: “Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness” and place them over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.

The pattern of government of the United States is found in these passages. The laws of the United States are also derived from the laws of God. Knowing that man is imperfect, the Founders, whether they believed in Jesus or not, knew that the only standard for law with absolute truth and purity would come from God–not from man. They established government based on enumerated powers (because man is imperfect) and on the concept that man was to live out his life as God intended and government was to only interfere if man was to harm another. Hence a few rights given up to a government to protect the population from man’s imperfections.

Do not be confused. This nation was established so that you and I could live out our lives as we see fit and do no harm to others. There is no other country in the world that has this like we do. I believe it is God-breathed and God-blessed that we might be examples to the rest of the world, to spread the gospel, to make disciples. But there are those who do not want this. They will say anything, do anything, teach anything to prevent you from even believing that you have a God-given right to live, much less live freely. Some of them are in the pulpit.

We, as citizens of this country where God through men has given us a say in our freedoms, have a duty to ourselves and our posterity to be good stewards in preserving that blessing and gift.  As Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”

Have A Blessed And Powerful Day,
