The Jot/Mr President: If it’s about saving our children, stop abortion

By Bill Wilson There is no shortage of dictators who have surrounded themselves with children in an attempt to emotionally ply citizens to go along with something that is ultimately bad for them. The occupant of the Oval Office ripped a page from the dictator handbook and should receive an Oscar nomination for his State of the Union performance of using children to convince Americans to disarm. While the emotions of his examples in Chicago and Sandy Hook tug on the heart strings of many, the facts surrounding his justification for disarmament underscore one of the most hypocritical and outrageous lies ever perpetrated on the American people.

He said, “Of course, what I’ve said tonight matters little if we don’t come together to protect our most precious resource:  our children.” He said 15 year old Hadiya Pendleton was killed in a Chicago park, “just a mile from my house. Hadiya’s parents, Nate and Cleo, are in this chamber tonight, along with more than two dozen Americans whose lives have been torn apart by gun violence. They deserve a vote. They deserve a vote. Gabby Giffords deserves a vote. The families of Newtown deserve a vote. The families of Aurora deserve a vote. The families of Oak Creek and Tucson and Blacksburg, and the countless other communities ripped open by gun violence–they deserve a simple vote. They deserve a simple vote.”

Let’s look at the facts: Since he used Chicago as an example. Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in America. To own a gun, one must pay $100 to have a Chicago Firearm Permit, which must be renewed every three years, there is a one time Chicago Police Department registration fee of $15 and an annual registration report must be filed. Gun owners must complete a five hour training course. Only one working gun is allowed per owner and it is permitted only inside a dwelling–not a garage or on outside grounds. In addition, the state requires a Firearm Owners Identification Card, a 72 hour waiting period, and possession of certain types of guns are banned–automatic pistols, short barreled rifles and shotguns.

Child deaths by firearms in Chicago were 66 in 2008, 79 in 2009, and 84 in 2010. Firearms during that period accounted for 5% of all deaths of Chicago children, according to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. According to the Centers for Disease Control, from 2008 through 2010 there were 74,565 abortions in Cook County (the county where Chicago is located). Cook County accounted for roughly 61% of Illinois’ abortions during that period. According to the CDC total deaths of children 19 and under average about 21,621 per year or roughly 64,863 from 2008-10. Total US Deaths of children under 17 caused by firearms were 2,675 during 2008-10, or 7.7% of all deaths of minors.

Chicago aborted nearly 10,000 more preborns during 2008-2010 than total US deaths of minors. In fact, the Alan Guttmacher Institute, an affiliate of Planned Parenthood, estimated that there were 1.2 million abortions conducted annually from 2008-10 (over 3.6 million total). Deaths of children caused by firearms during the same period are .07% of those caused by abortion. In cities like Chicago with the toughest gun laws in the nation, firearm deaths are actually higher than cities that have far less “gun control.” Even the occupant of the Oval Office admitted in his speech, “Our actions will not prevent every senseless act of violence in this country.  In fact, no laws, no initiatives, no administrative acts will perfectly solve all the challenges I’ve outlined tonight.”

This is not about children or child safety. It is about disarmament. If it were really about children, the Constitutional right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness of preborn children would have equal protection under the law. This president is using children to disarm the United States while ignoring the tax funded murder of millions of preborns by his crony supporters at Planned Parenthood. Jesus said in Luke 17:2, “It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and cast into the sea, than that he should harm one of these little ones.”

Have A Blessed And Powerful Day,

Bill Wilson
