In Philippians chapter 2 Paul is telling the young Christians to have hope in Christ. He’s telling them to have encouragement from being united with Christ. He say’s to find comfort from his love and fellowship with the Spirit. we should have tenderness and compassion, and be like minded, having this same love, and purpose. He tells us we are to do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. We are to be humble, and consider others better than ourselves. This thought is echoed from Christ also when he say’s ‘if you are invited to a banquet, don’t take the best seat in the house, and think better of ourselves than our host.’ He also tells the disciples when they asked who was greatest: ‘If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.’ Paul goes on to tell us that we are not to look to our own interests, but also to the interests of others.
“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:”
- “Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
- But made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
- And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death–even death on a cross!
- Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
- that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
- and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
So while we reflect about the Passover and the death and resurrection of Christ, let us remember to humble ourselves like Christ, and give to each other not only in physical ways, but let us give to each other in humility and like that of a little child, support and encouragement. I’ll end this with the next verse (12): “Therefore my dear friends, as you have always obeyed–not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence–continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe…..”
