Strongest Solar Flare This Year To Light up Skies Over The Weekend

An M6.5 class solar flare was detected the other day, and it blew a major CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) directly toward our planet, for a light show for some on Saturday and Sunday night.

The explosion was so powerful that it hit the SOHO Satellite, providing video images of ‘speckles’, which means this is coming in fast.

The expected impact time here on Earth will be at 3pm Pacific 6pm Eastern, and 12am across Europe. This places the impact point for best viewing across the European Continent, with the United States coming in later Saturday night.

Projections range from a kp6 to kp9 event. TheWeatherSpace.com Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin is watching the event, and will release his viewing conditions maps this evening. These maps show where it will be too cloudy to view the event, and where the best locations will be.

“This should be a strong one!,” said Martin. “We could see the red glow down into Arizona’s northern skies with good exposure cameras.”

The display will be brightest from Alaska, Canada, and the Northern Tier of Europe and North America.
