Sinai Insurgency Erupts: Militant Snipers Kill 3 Policemen As Egypt Begins Offensive

Published on Jul 21, 2013

Snipers have killed three more Egyptian policemen in the volatile Sinai Peninsula in a coordinated attack. The policemen were guarding an administrative building, a TV station and a police station in El-Arish, the main city in northern Sinai near the border with the Gaza Strip and Israel. Islamic militants, long active in the area, have intensified their attacks against security forces since the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi on 3 July. The almost daily attacks have targeted the El-Arish airport, checkpoints and police stations. Egypt last week deployed thousands of troops, tanks and armoured personnel carriers to the area to quash the insurgency and restore order.
