My comment:  As I said before this is unadulterated hatred!  From a religion of peace?  Our hearts and prayers are with the girls and their families.

A hardline Islamic cleric wanted for questioning over the Zanzibar acid attack on two British teenagers handed himself in on Sunday as police faced criticism for their slow-paced investigations.

Detectives believe Issa Ponda may have inspired the attack on Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, who remained in hospital being treated for their injuries last night.

Sheikh Ponda surrendered a day after he was injured during police attempts to arrest him on the orders of Tanzania’s chief prosecutor.

He is under guard being treated in hospital and will be interrogated once doctors discharge him.

Miss Gee and Miss Trup, both 18 and from north London, were volunteering for at a Zanzibar nursery school when two men on a moped threw acid over them, wounding them on their faces, hands, legs, backs, necks and chests.

Both are said to be “devastated” by the extent of their injuries, which relatives fear will leave them with long-term physical and mental scars.

It has been suggested that at least one of the girls might need skin grafts.

There were concerns yesterday that police in Zanzibar, an archipelago off the Tanzanian mainland, may have let crucial witnesses and the culprits themselves leave the island before being questioned.

Simai Mohammed Said, a Zanzibari MP and former tourism association chairman, warned that the longer the investigation dragged on, the less chance police would have to bring a prosecution.

Mr Said, the ex-head of the Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors, told The Telegraph that swift police action was needed to restore confidence in the island as a tourist destination.

“The police need to interview everyone, all the girls’ friends here, any potential witness, it’s a large number of people they should be talking to,” he said. “As the days go by, the culprits have more and more time to run, and it’s more likely that tourists will leave the island.”

Four days after the attack there have been no arrests and police admit they have only questioned “six or seven people”.

Miss Gee and Miss Trup remain under investigation at the burns unit of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in central London, where they were admitted on Friday after returning on a medical evacuation flight from Tanzania.

Marc Trup, a property investor, said his daughter and Miss Gee were “struggling to come to terms” with their burns.

“They are really not in any emotional or physical state to do anything,” he said. “Since their arrival, the enormity of their ordeal is having a devastating effect on them as is the extent of the injuries.

“Each girl faces their own trauma, different but each equally important.

“These scars, mental and physical, (are) something they both have to live with for a long time.”

Dr Mohammed Jawad, a leading plastic surgeon, said it was “beyond question” that the teenagers would need skin grafts after examining a picture of one of the girls’ wounds.
