Syria vows to ‘defend’ itself in ways that will ‘surprise’ the world as country prepares for military strike

My Comment:  There are reports that Assad is in Iran, Russia is moving all sorts of people and equipment, the west is moving in equipment, is this a nuclear threat?  I would say so, given all the threats against Israel, Iran saying they will wipe Israel off the map, and then there’s the fact that the islamic messiah (madi) can’t return unless there is total war and chaos.  This is very serious.

Syria’s regime vowed to “defend” itself in ways that would “surprise” the world yesterday as President Bashar al-Assad’s allies prepared for a possible military strike by America and its allies.

Walid al-Muallem, the Syrian foreign minister, put on a show of defiance, emphatically denying that government forces had carried out poison gas attacks in Damascus last Wednesday and accusing America and Britain of preparing to go to war on the basis of “lies”.

Russia, meanwhile, accused the West of behaving like a “monkey with a grenade” as the Kremlin began evacuating its citizens from Syria.

United Nations inspectors visited the location of one alleged attack on Monday. But they cancelled their plans yesterday, apparently because of security concerns.

At a press conference in the foreign ministry in Damascus, Mr Muallem sat beneath a portrait of Mr Assad and a brace of Syrian national flags.

The regime was “still committed to give all assistance and guarantees” to the UN experts on chemical weapons, he said. Asked why the team had been unable to continue their work yesterday, he blamed the rebels, saying the insurgents had been unwilling to guarantee the inspectors’ security.

As for the looming attack by America and its allies, Mr Muallem said: “We have two options: either to surrender, or to defend ourselves with the means at our disposal. The second choice is the best: we will defend ourselves.”

Syria would demonstrate military capabilities that would “surprise” the world, added the minister, and any US-led campaign would make no difference to the regime’s determination.

“We have the means to defend ourselves and we will surprise everyone,” said Mr Muallem. “We will defend ourselves using all means available. I don’t want to say more than that.”

He added: “The strike will come and go. We get mortars every day and we have learned to live with them.”

The regime no longer denies that chemical weapons were used in Damascus last Wednesday, but places the blame on its enemies. “They [America and Britain] say that the Syrian army was the one that did this attack. I deny this utterly and completely,” said Mr Muallem. “There is no country in the world that would use an ultimate weapon of destruction against its own people.”
