
(WA Today) A powerful earthquake has struck in the Gulf of California off western Mexico.
The quake hit between the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California Sur, but there have been no immediate reports of damage.
The 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit about 4.55am (AEST) on Sunday, about 74 km south-west of Etchoropo in Sonora, the US Geological Survey reported on its website, revising down its original estimate of 6.8 for the temblor. The quake struck at a depth of 1 km, the USGS said.
Emergency services in Sonora and Sinaloa states said there were no immediate reports of damage. It was not immediately clear how the quake had affected Baja California Sur.

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no tsunami threat to Australia.
