(The Telegraph) Vladimir Putin has mocked diplomatic efforts to end the Ukraine crisis as Russia threatened to disrupt European gas supplies by cutting off sales to Kiev over its unpaid debts. The Russian president said through his official spokesman that, despite deep disagreements with the West, he did not want a confrontation over Ukraine to spiral into a “new cold war”. Putin mocks the West and threatens to turn off gas supplies – Telegraph.
My Comment: This threat of sanctions to Russia is just about the most rediculous thing that Western Leaders have done yet. They have really pulled some nonsensical, preposterous acts in the past, like thrusting Iran into a position of world power, but this is about the worst. I agree with Putin. Have they forgot that Russia supplies almost half of Europe with gas? And that’s just gas.
The Russian Federation supplies a significant volume of fossil fuels and is the largest exporter of oil and natural gas to the European Union. In 2007, the European Union imported from Russia 185 million tonnes of crude oil, which accounted for 32.6% of total oil import, and 100.7 million tonnes of oil equivalent of natural gas, which accounted 38.7% of total gas import.
