The pearl of great price is wisdom which only the word of God can provide, and when we find it we are willing to sell all we have if need be to attain it. So what is the price? It is to daily take up your cross and although unpleasant be mocked, shunned and reproached for Christ’s sake. (Matthew 13:44-46). Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
This wisdom is so precious in the sight of God that we are instructed not to misuse it nor speak it unwisely among those who are living against its righteous ways. (Matthew 7:6). Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
