(Scroll down for video) The largest city in Iran got hit with an estimated 25 million rats with some larger than cats, according to press reports in the United States.

Tehran has a rodent problem, a very large problem. Rats not only easily outnumber the residents of the city, they are also monstrously large.According to press reports, these parasites can weigh up to 11 pounds more than some regular cats.

The city has always had a problem with rats. Each spring, the water from the melted snow dumped from the Alborz mountains, brings the rats out from the underground. Back in 2000, Iran attempted to poison the rats, make them thirsty and forcing them underground in search of water, It did not work. In any event, the rats now appear to be even stronger and larger.

An environmental adviser to the council, Ismail Kahram, said: “They are bigger now and they look different. These are changes that normally take millions of years of evolution.”

So now, in addition to chemicals, authorities have deployed sniper teams equipped with infrared lights for night hunting. So far, teams have been successful in breaking down only about 2,000 of them.

“It has become a 24 hour, 7 days a week war,” Hadi Heydarzadeh, the head of Tehran Municipality’s environmental agency, said last month. “We use chemical poisons to kill rats during the day and at night we use snipers,” he added.
