Chuck Baldwin — Why Pastors Won’t Take A Stand

I am constantly asked, “Chuck, why don’t pastors take a stand and speak out?” I’ve been a pastor most of my adult life. I believe I am qualified to answer that question. Here is the stark reality: the vast majority of pastors today are “success” oriented. Beginning in Bible College or seminary, and continuing throughout a pastor’s ministerial life, the emphasis is success. And that means church growth, larger congregations, bigger buildings, bigger offerings, burgeoning statistics, greater notoriety, denominational praise, invitations to speak at conferences, applause from fellow ministers, not to mention the financial perks and benefits that come with pastoring a “successful” church.

And the way to learn how to build a successful church is to learn from those who have done it. Pastors regularly attend church growth conferences to learn from the “big” church pastors on how it’s done. They purchase books, magazines, newsletters, etc., that are all geared towards telling pastors how to build a successful church. They are constantly being schooled in the latest and greatest “how to” strategies of church growth and success. This usually entails more and more sophisticated programs, music, sound, lighting, atmosphere, classes, seminars, organization, etc. Everything, and I mean everything, is geared toward success as described in the aforementioned paragraph.

Most pastors today are in reality not spiritual shepherds as much as they are corporate CEOs. The same mentality, philosophy, and strategy that drive corporate boardrooms also drive the boardrooms of modern churches–to a tee. Pastors act like CEOs, dress like CEOs, talk like CEOs, manage like CEOs, and think like CEOs.

Dare I say that even the way pastors and churches cater, and “reach out,” and “minister,” etc., has mostly to do with “good business.” Church members are babied and pacified and stroked and petted and fawned-over because it is “good business.” Today’s Christians are so spoiled and petted that any dereliction or lack of attention by a pastor, church, or staff usually results in them “moving their letter” down the street to a place that will more readily cater to their temperamental demands.

  1. (Quote by Chuck Baldwin) I am constantly asked, “Chuck, why don’t pastors take a stand and speak out?”

What are they going to stand up for? Many don’t take a stand for Jesus; they don’t really believe and support what the Word of God says. More than a few are bold enough to stand up and speak up to support a world view for a changing society, though. They dish out every wind of doctrine, new interpretations of the gospel of Christ, encourage their members to chase after signs and wonders and get involved with New Age meditation and mysticism, paranormal experiences, angel worship, etc. etc. Our family has personal experience with this and recently our daughters and their families left their churches because there is no emphasis on teaching the Word!

Many pastors are deceived and deceiving their members, causing confusion and division and God’s sheep to be scattered. Many misguided Christians are dumb sheep mesmerized by charismatic leaders of mind control and are ignorant followers. It is happening all over the world. • Thank you Shofar, I truly value your insights. I have witnessed this also, that is why we can’t find one church that is our home. I can’t believe the churches now. They are so worried about getting their next massage, or what can God do for me? They teach bordering on heresy, they refuse to acknowledge sin, even affirming it at times to keep from offending. They refuse to teach prophecy, for fear of scaring people. Really? They teach universalism as if it was sent from God directly to them. It’s a sad state of affairs. I can only imagine what our Lord thinks as He looks down. Of course we have His thoughts in Revelation. He tells the church in Laodaceia that He is about to spit them out of His mouth due to their lukewarmness. Rev. 3:14-16. Now I understand what Jesus meant when he said ‘Not everyone who say’s Lord, Lord will enter in.’ It’s not easy to watch. God bless you!

  2. Pastor Chuck Baldwin is right on target on ‘Why Pastors Won’t Take a Stand!’ They are carnally-minded & success driven, & not spiritually led by the Holy Spirit. The enemy has entered into the churches big time. To gain attendance, influence, & wealth, they withhold or compromise the truth of the Word of God, as most people do not want to hear about immorality, sin & hell.

It is a very sad thing when you consider the many mega-churches & other wannabes today, with thousands of their members hearing ‘another gospel’ of feigned love, good works, & brotherhood, but neglecting to hear of God’s forthcoming wrath & judgment, the need for repentance; about the Enditmes, & of hell!

Though these mega-churches are successful & rich Re3:17, are the people attending them saved & ‘born again’ including their pastors? Yesterday, I read a bumper sticker which shocked me; ‘Hope Church- We Promise To Love You, As Is!’ Man’s smooth lies, though pleasantly presented, will destroy you! Only the truth can save you! Jesus said ‘..ye shall know the truth, & the truth shall make you free Jn8:32- from sin & hell.

  3. One thing truly stands out in this article and that is how they go on and on about the teaching they get from man……THAT’S IT! …..These people go to seminaries for their education from man and the ONLY SCHOOL of knowing the truth is found through the Holy Spirit.
What did the Prophets of old do when they Loved God so much and he called them? There were no school’s for them or books to read! Did Moses actually hear from God and do what he was told? or did he hear a voice that spoke with him and he said wait a second I have to go and look at a book? “If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus. And be ye renewed in the Spirit of your mind”.(Ephesians 4:21,23).
God today and has always taught his people his truth through their Faith they put in him…This is the whole teaching of the Christian to Believe through Faith of the unseen and trust in God.
If these pastors really need a book to go by perhaps they should open the bible and learn that the word of God is free to hearing ears and the sight of a big beautiful building’s don’t impress God,but a humble heart seeking the truth is of great price in his sight.
“Shew me thy ways , O Lord; teach me thy paths.Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day”.(Psalm 25:4,5).
There was an EXCELLENT point made in this article:”Most pastors today are in reality not spiritual shepherds.Thank God for Chuck Baldwin who gave a true answer for the scattering of the people.God Bless This Site that prints only the truth.
