Chuck Baldwin — The Rapture Problem

My Comment:  Have you ever wondered why the Jewish Scholars of Jesus’ time didn’t recognize their Messiah?  I have.  I believe it was because of pre-conceived ideas about what they thought the scriptures stated.  Which is what some are doing today.  This article lays out the truth about the dangers of believing in a secret rapture.  Dangers that keep me awake at night.  We must be about our Father’s business, Jesus taught parables about his delayed coming in the Bridesmaids and the bridegroom, and others.  Anyway, please read the whole article  by Pastor Chuck Baldwin.

By Pastor Chuck Baldwin

In this column last week, I stated the salient reasons why pastors will not take a public stand on issues regarded as controversial or political. I believe every point I made are the real reasons pastors refuse to stand for much of anything–or even objectively study anything outside their comfort zone. To read this column, go to:

Why Pastors Won’t Take A Stand

To review, most pastors refuse to take a stand because:

1. They are success oriented and have an innate aversion to anything that is considered to be controversial. And, to them, there is nothing more controversial than politics.

2. They are afraid that if they take a controversial stand, they will lose members–and more importantly, tithes and offerings. Most churches are neck-deep in debt and are heavy-laden with staff and overhead. The thought of losing even a few giving families is enough intimidation to make sure that they do nothing to offend the people of the congregation. And since the pastor never addresses controversial issues or preaches “hard” sermons, his congregation is filled with people who harbor myriads of big-government, socialist ideas and would immediately bolt at any mention of Biblical Natural Law principles that ran counter to their leftist ideologies.

3. They have an erroneous interpretation of Romans 13 that civil government must be submitted to regardless of how evil or immoral its laws might be. This fallacious interpretation of Romans 13 (which is taught in practically every Christian school and college in America) has made them de facto slaves and worshippers of the state. As did Germany’s pastors and Christians in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, America’s pastors and Christians suffer from national “exceptionalism.” This fallacy leads them to believe that by serving the state, they are serving God. In their minds, one cannot be “right with God” if they are not totally submissive to the state.

4. The 501c3 non-profit corporation status of the Internal Revenue Code under which the vast majority of churches throughout America operate has intimidated pastors and church leaders to the point that they will do–or not do–almost anything to stay in the good graces of the IRS. To most pastors, this means staying absolutely as far away from political issues as possible–even if those issues were moral and spiritual in nature a long time before they were considered political.

5. Most pastors are ignorant of the Biblical Natural Law principles of liberty. In the same way that many attorneys are completely ignorant of constitutional government, pastors are completely ignorant of Biblical Natural Law principles. Attorneys are not taught constitutional principles in law school, and pastors are not taught Biblical Natural Law principles in Bible school.

But there is one more reason why many pastors will not take a stand that I did not address in the aforementioned column: their belief in a pre-tribulation rapture.

The word “rapture” does not appear in the Bible. The English word “rapture” is taken from the Latin word “rapere” and means to “catch away.” Theologically, it means that Christians will be caught away or taken to Heaven while they are still alive. There are several scriptural passages that Christians believe relate to this event, but the most cited is I Thessalonians 4:16, 17: “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up (Greek word “harpazo”) together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

Of course, Christians throughout the centuries have taught and believed a variety of nuances of eschatology. The various interpretations of The Second Coming of Christ are almost limitless. There are pre-tribulational, pre-millennialists; mid-tribulational, pre-millennialists; post-tribulational, pre-millennialists; partial-rapture, pre-tribulational, pre-millennialists; post-millennialists; pre-wrath, (almost) post-millennialists; amillennialists, etc. And to each of these interpretations there is a plethora of sub-divisions and schisms.

Christians have historically believed that they will be resurrected to be with Christ. However, that conviction–historically and by itself–did not prevent Christians from being engaged in whatever the political, social, or cultural battles of the time might have been. From the earliest days of Christianity, believers were politically and socially engaged in their communities and countries. During the Roman Empire, a baby was not protected by law until the father granted it official human status. Until then, babies could be legally killed or allowed to die. Christians by the thousands would go out into the streets at night and rescue babies that had been “thrown away” and left to die. During the Dark Ages, when the Bible was banned, Christians continued to widely copy and distribute the scriptures. Reformers such as Ulrich Zwingli died defending Switzerland’s Protestant Reformation on the battlefield. Colonial Christians (including pastors) in great numbers participated in America’s War for Independence. The great German theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, joined a Nazi resistance movement. Each of these Christian believers held their individual, respective views of the Lord’s coming and personal resurrection, but this did not keep them from being politically, socially, and culturally–and sometimes militarily–involved in their communities and countries.

However, with the broad acceptance of what has become known as Dispensationalism, many pastors and churches in America have almost totally removed themselves from political affairs. Except for voting (which is mostly kept private), pastors avoid politics like the plague. A few will talk in very broad and general terms about America “turning back to God,” etc., but what that means specifically is seldom addressed. And if pressed for an explanation, most pastors will piously say, “God has not called me to get involved in politics.” I’m not sure that God has called them to play golf either, but that doesn’t prevent a host of them from engaging regularly in that worldly activity.

Dispensationalism, as it is called today, was popularized by John Darby, C. I. Scofield, and Lewis Sperry Chafer. In more modern times, John Walvoord, J. Dwight Pentecost, Charles Ryrie, Tim LaHaye, and Hal Lindsey contributed immensely to Dispensationalism’s theological acceptance. The key element of Dispensationalism, as it relates to eschatology, is the doctrine of a pre-tribulation rapture of Christians. The idea is that the world is going to continue to get worse and worse until finally the Anti-Christ will arise as a global leader and will usher in seven years of “Great Tribulation,” wherein a sizeable portion of the world’s population will be destroyed. But before “The Great Tribulation” begins, Christian believers will be raptured into Heaven. Dispensationalists further believe that following the seven year Tribulation period, Christ will physically return to Jerusalem and establish a 1,000 year reign (called The Millennium) in which the Davidic Kingdom will be restored to Israel.

Now, let me state plainly that it is not my intention at this point to disparage the sincerity of faith and belief of the vast numbers of pastors and Christians who subscribe to Dispensationalism. Whether the pre-tribulation rapture is a correct Biblical interpretation or not is NOT the focus of this discussion. I find a sizeable number of pastors and Christians who subscribe to post-millennialism and other forms of eschatology to be just as disengaged from speaking out and engaging the political process as pre-tribulationists.

That being said, I believe it is an absolute fact that many pastors and Christians are using the doctrine of a pre-tribulation rapture to justify sitting back and doing nothing to actively resist evil and wickedness. In their minds, there is no need to be politically involved because everything is going to get worse anyway–but they are going to be raptured to Heaven before it all falls apart. I have actually had pastors say to me, “Chuck, by resisting evil government, you are fighting against God, because it is God’s will that government gets worse and worse so that Jesus can come back.”

  2. I am grieved that people will agree with just about anything without understanding it fully for themselves. I have much to say about this article. First of all, it is outrageous to say that all “Pastor’s” that hold to a Pre- Trib rapture are useless and ineffective simply because of this doctine. The bigger problem is not even addressed here. The bigger heresy is Dominionism or Kingdom Now Theology. It is sweeping through the Church, both Evangelical as well as the Pentecostal portion. These doctrines that teach the Church is to take control of the world for Christ are not Biblical and deny every prophecy of Jesus as well as the Book of Revelation. The teachers of this doctrine agree openly that it is exttrabiblical revelation…progressive revelation from God…no, it isn’t. God does nothing outside of His Word. This theology has promoted greedy, self serving Pastor imposters. Prosperity teaching and miracles all sorts of carnal experiences that invite evil spirits into the church and they call it “God”. They are the false prophets of the Church of Laodicea that the Bible warns about that say peace and safety, scoffers and mockers (2 Peter). Promoting a Universal salvation or a violent conquest of the World.

True believers that hold on to the BLESSED HOPE, are not complacent. There is an urgency as we see the day approaching to reach out to the lost. Where does the Bible teach us in the NEW Covenant that we are responsible for social reform. We do not live in a theocracy as did the ancient Nation of Israel. We are supposed to affect the world, one soul at a time. As we spread the Gospel, not social programs, people will be changed and communities will be affected by the exampe of true Christians.

The Bible clearly warns that there will be an Apostasy before Christ comes; false doctrines, heresy, lying signs and wonders pervade the church…it is already in the door. John Hagee has his own agenda, not a Christian agenda. He promotes a damnable two covenant theology….not Christian. We need to wake up and be about the Father’s business of preaching the good news, and making desciples of all people…that is never a national mandate but a personal and individual one. Please be more discerning brothers and sisters and search the evidence for yourself…this is just more of the same political blaming that goes on, so lets blame the Pre-tribbers. The church didn’t crreate the wars in this world, evil greedy people who want to rule did. The Lord Jesus is coming…it is He who told us to pray that we be counted worthy to stand before the Son of Man and escape the things coming on the earth; that those that were faithful and did not deny His Name and kept His Word He would keep from the hour of trial coming on the whole earth.

The Great Triblulation is not just another time of persecution, for the church has know that for 2000 years. It is a time that God is allowing evil to rise up and do it’s worst, and God is dealing with mankind one last time…it is the make it or break it time for all eternity…it is for deceived Laodicea and all the unbelievers to find sever mercy to press them out of complacency that thay might yet turn to Christ before it is too late. Think for yourself, search the Word, study and pray with the help of the Holy Spirit and discern the times….shalom, Maranatha.

    • I agree with much of what you have said. The Kingdom now theology is a big part of the churchs falling away. There is so much it’s hard to tell in one post or comment. The Pre-Tribulation doctrine is a false doctrine, as well as the Kingdom now, and the twisting of scripture to fit the sin of the day. I have been warning for quite some time, that both these doctrines are actually aiding in the rise of the beast and evil in the world. And yes, the ministers who teach and preach this secret pre-tribulation rapture are dangerous. What makes them think that they are more special than Jesus, or the Apostles or the millions of our Brothers and Sisters in Christ who have died during persecution. The Bible tells us the servant is no better than his Master. If our Master was persecuted than why shouldn’t we be? In fact Jesus warned of this very thing. Persecution is exponentially increasing and they are silent, even ignoring it, with the attitude that you just stated, ‘It’s been going on for centuries so why should we pay attention.’ This is dangerous, it extinguishes the light of the Body of Christ. We are to be the light of the world, leading the way to salvation, and what are we doing? We are gathering together in the all about me churchs of today looking for special treatment in a secret rapture. This will lead many to destruction. I have also warned that the Great tribulation is upon us as evil and persecution is growing, and taking over the world. I have always encouraged people to be Bereans and search the scripture for themselves. I have encouraged discernment, and guidance from the Holy Spirit, not man. Another great danger is the prosperity now gospel. So yes, there are many evils in this world taking over. And if the Body of Christ continues to slumber it will be as Jesus warned and His coming will catch them as a thief in the night. For God’s word is true, it does not need man made doctrines, such as Darby introduced. Thank you for your comment, and I encourage you also to discern the times we are in. I am looking up, for our redemption is drawing near.

      • I do not hold to pre-trib. However, I felt it was unfair to blame all the evils in the church and ineffectiveness on these Pastors. I have shared with people for years that there is evidence in scripture that could include one or two raptures…if you consider the Feasts of the Lord, as there are three harvests…barley, wheat and fall fruits. As far as those who do teach pre-trib or mid-trib telling people not to do anything…not true. Perhaps some don’t but I don’t believe it is the doctrine itself that makes them be silent. Some are afraid of the politics of it. I suggest you check out Perry Stone who discusses the rapture, but he also adamantly is teaching about the prophetic state we are in Including the politics…Pastor Paul Begley (YouTube) daily warns and makes known the perils we are in via current events…crying out and sounding the alarm…he also believes in the rapture. There are others like him who are striving to make people aware. You Tubers who believe in the rapture are the voice of warning and alarm to preach the Gospel, reach out while we may…whether we are raptured, or imprisoned our season to carry the Gospel is NOW….bottom line. Can’t reach people in the world who are being deceived from a FEMA camp. The rapture is not a saving doctrine. To demonize someone because they hope in the deliverance of the Lord is wrong. The three Jewish boys in Daniel declared God would deliver them, but even if He didn’t,…they would not submit to a false god. Job declares even if He slay me, yet will I trust Him…to have hope is not a sin…

A person is a false teacher when they deny the scriptures as they are written…when you take away from Christ anything that makes Him who He is or diminish He’s finished work you fall into dangerous territory, when you alter the Book of Revelation to accommodate “extra-Biblical” revelation…you are in danger as with Dominionism…when you attack Paul and call him a false prophet (which some do) you are in danger…I teach people to occupy till He comes…watch and be ready, but continue to do what the Lord has called us to do, as long as we can…Remember Daniel says the wise will understand…it is the wise Virgins who are taken in to the marriage. Many are painfully aware that we have already entered into the tribulation…many are not foolishly ignoring the signs and times. But the devil’s doctrines of prosperity as you said and Dominion theology are depicted in the church of Laodicea. Let’s go after the doctrines that will not save…a grace that does not change…a Christ that is not divine…a bloodless gospel without the cross…a universal salvation false gospel…new age spirituality that leads the church back to Rome…via Alpha Course…or a “works” salvation….these are the more weighty issues…If these precious saints are waiting for Jesus, and they are saved…whether He comes early or late..He won’t lose them…but if we preach a false gospel whether they trust in rapture, prosperity or dominion they are still lost…shalom.

Your opening paragraph is nothing but the illogical prattle of a fool.

The church has been hamstrung by their continued refusal to serve one master…the Lord. We cannot serve two masters. Who you pay tribute to, you serve. Who you serve, you obey. Who you obey, you worship. We ought to obey God not men. Acts 5:29. The maxims of law state…he that supports and action ratifies that action… what your agent does, you are responsible for…where there is no dissent, assent is to be presumed. These maxims alone tie ‘citizens’ to the evil of the kingdom they serve. Plug in what Christ commands and it blows what your nonsense right out of the water. To say we are to allow evil to prevail and refuse to take dominion is the false doctrines of devils. The great cloud of witnesses which went before us prove you wrong by their actions. You are a false minister. Every dog has its day…yours will be the day you give account of this deception you promote as truth.

      • fbayer1 I don’t know what you read, but you did not read Chuck Baldwin’s article posted here. Nothing you say makes sense. I did not write this article, but I agree with it. The church is doing a great dis-service by not speaking out about the evil overtaking America and the world. They do this in part because they are teaching that Christians will be raptured before any tribulation takes place. That’s a fact. It is the doctrine of demons that is misguiding the body of Christ, and deceiving them into thinking that they should remain silent in the face of adversity. God will not hold us blameless. Every dog has it’s day indeed, just as Peter warns those who turn from the truth in 2Peter2 20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,”[a] and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.”

    • Ann You are absolutely right . What bothers me the most is that so many of our brothers and sisters are facing great tribulation and persecution. While others simply think they are special and will escape secretly. Jesus didn’t teach that. He spent time teaching and warning us of the tribulation we would face. Blessings to you dear sistet.

I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from
        he evil one.

Jesus spoke these words to God the Father when His hour had come.

He had glorified God having finished the work which God His Father gave Him to complete.

Jesus never asks for His Church to be taken from the earth, only to keep us from the evil one!

Yes it was at His hour he spoke these words, was He referring to His Apostles only or Hus Disciples, because I believe He was talking about ALL His Disciples of which I am one!
