” The Ten Commandments Are Still In Effect “

Some things with the passing of time become annulled, like blood sacrifices of animals for the remission of sin, for Christ became our Passover Lamb. But the Ten Commandments give to Moses at the mount have not changed one iota and Jesus taught this. (Matthew 5:17-19). Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

We know the commandments are still in effect as they are not only spoken of in the Old Testament but also in the new. (Romans 13:8-10). Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Not only are the ten commandments still in effect, Jesus even gave us a new commandment that will stand out to others that you are His disciple if we do it, and that is to love one another! (John 13:34-35). A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

  1. When God instituted the New Covenant that is with all people (Jews and Gentiles alike) through living faith in Jesus Christ, God made the Old Covenant (which was between God and his Old Testament nation of Israel) – along with all of its rules and regulations – obsolete. Please see Hebrews 8:13, “In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete…” (ESV)

But before we jump to any rash conclusions, please remember that to whatever extent Old Covenant directives represented timeless principles which reflected the very nature and character of God, we would expect any New Covenant God made with mankind to be in harmony with them. And that is – in fact – what we find when we investigate God’s New Testament with all people through faith in Christ Jesus.

For example, imagine that your brother had an Old Lease on an apartment and that the full duration of that old lease covenant has completed. That first lease covenant is no longer in effect.

Next, imagine that you move into the same apartment complex and sign a brand New Lease covenant on an apartment with that same landlord. Now imagine that this landlord’s character is “the same yesterday, today, and forever”. You would probably expect to see many of the same principles that were found in your brother’s Old Lease also within the pages of your own New Lease covenant.

Now here is a question: If, in the first lease agreement that the landlord made with your brother (and which has expired), there was a section prohibiting defacement of property, and in the New Lease that you have with the same landlord (which is currently active) also has a section similarly prohibiting defacement of property, does that mean the legal clause from the first expired lease agreement is “still in effect” and binding upon you? The actual answer to that question is “no”. Defacement of property is prohibited under your New Lease, but it is not because the Old Lease is “still in effect”. The Old Lease is not in effect. Defacement of property is prohibited for you because it is prohibited under your New Lease with is in effect.

In that example, the ‘brother’ represented any member of the Israelite nation who lived under the law of Moses before the arrival of Jesus.

The Old Lease represents the entire Old Covenant (Old Testament) – including the ten commandments.

The section prohibiting defacement of property is any prohibition from the Old Covenant which is also a sin under the New Covenant (New Testament).

    • Unfortunately scripture does not support your answer in saying we do not need to keep the ten commandments, for the following reasons.

In Jesus’ own words He says “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15) These commandments are those given by His Father “The ten commandment’s.” The following passage shows Jesus telling us that even He keeps His Father’s commandment’s
(John 15:10) If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law not to change it, and that law includes the ten commandment’s
For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-20).

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (1 John 5:1-3).

Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. (Revelation 22:14)

In light of who Christ truly was is that He was God who was in the flesh and walked among men. He and His father are one and the same. His commandments of old are also for our day and age. I and my Father are one. (John 10:30).

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (1 John 3:4).

Thank you for your comment. Blessings.

      • Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly. It stands in perfect completion through the work of Christ.

But Jesus’ commands that he instructed His disciples to perform and teach in the new covenant were not the commandments of law from the law of Moses.

Jesus said “A ‘new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. (John 15:12)

The O.T. law of Moses contained over 600 commandments Do you believe all of them are still in effect? If not, how do you determine which ones are and which ones are not?

For example, do you believe it is a sin to break this commandment from the law?
Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material Leviticus 19:19

I wear polyester cotton blend shirts because I believe this commandment from the O.T. law of Moses is no longer binding. It is no longer “in effect”

I’m interested in whether you obey this commandment from the law of Moses or not. If you don’t, on what basis do believe it doesn’t need to be obeyed?

      • We could argue about old testament laws, but it would be a frivolous debate as this post was about the ten commandment’s still in effect and not about old testament laws. Many things have been done away in Christ. When we read the new testament it clearly teaches us what is and is not in place since the old testament. This post is addressing the ten commandments that they are still in place as many are trying to remove what even Christ followed.
The levitical personal laws are in place for our well being. Case in point pork was not permitted to be eaten as it is unclean, and sure we can eat pork all day long today all we want, but we suffer the consequence with bad health and suffer with strokes or heart attacks because of a wrong diet. It is our personal choice to wear and eat as we see fit for ourselves, but are instructed not to put a stumbling block before others who choose to eat or wear things differently. (Romans 14:13-17).
        Blessings Always.

      • Just in case there may have been a misunderstanding, I am not trying to claim that it would somehow be ‘OK’ for someone to murder or steal because “the 10 commandments from the law of Moses” are no longer “in effect”. Those sins are still wrong. Indeed, the New Testament covenant prohibits these sins.

My position is merely that Christians do not kill and do not steal and do not make graven images etc. because those actions are prohibited under the New Testament covenant. Not because of laws written on tablets of stone.
But rather because God has now written these truths on our hearts by the Holy Spirit in the New Covenant.

This is what Jeremiah spoke of in Jer. 31:33 “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. ”

Hebrews 10:1-16 attests that this condition is indeed a present reality in the new covenant of grace through faith in Jesus.

  2. Though the 10 commandments are still in effect and not annulled if you follow the first commandment:

Mark 12:30-33 and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. The second is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. And the scribe said unto him, Of a truth, Teacher, thou hast well said that he is one; and there is none other but he: and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is much more than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices.

    Then one finds themselves following the 10 commandments without any thought at all. This was the question asked by the scribes;

Mark 12:28 And one of the scribes came, and heard them questioning together, and knowing that he had answered them well, asked him, What commandment is the first of all?

So in effect we have an 11th commandment but it is the first of all and when you walk with the Lord this way all things follow on behind including the 10 commandments. One just does them naturally because one is following the first commandment. You could say there is an 11th and 12th commandment but if you love the Lord your God as is stated then you will love your neighbour as you love thyself.

Others that put the 10 commandments above all things are incorrect and any building that has them on display should be altered to show the commandments as stated by Jesus.
