Is There Any Such Thing as ABSOLUTE Truth?

By Greg Holt

Long has there been a debate about truth, specifically, about whether or not there is one truth, or an absolute truth.  How can we know?

Most of us have heard of the saying: “Just because that is your truth, doesn’t mean that it is my truth,” or some version thereof.  Logically speaking, there is a serious problem with that statement, or more accurately, that entire line of thought.

Let’s look at the definition of truth:

TRUTH, noun

  1. Conformity to fact or reality; exact accordance with that which is, or has been, or shall be. The truth of history constitutes its whole value. We rely on the truth of the scriptural prophecies.

My mouth shall speak truth Proverbs 8:7.

Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth John 17:17.
(Source – Webster’s Dictionary of the American Language)

Note the use of Bible verses in the definition.  “Conformity to fact,” well, the expressed words of two people diametrically opposed to one another’s “truth” on the same subject cannot be truth or fact in this instance.  Opinions yes, but both cannot be truth.

People like to claim that what they think and say is the truth, that is in no way true.  Truth cannot be based on what any one of us says.  If that were the case, then anything said by anyone could be/would be classified as truth, right?

For years people thought and stated that the Earth was flat, some people amazingly enough still believe this nonsense, then again plenty of people foolishly believe that God is not real.  But the Earth is NOT flat, it is round.  That of course means that all those who thought and said that the Earth was flat, were not expressing truth.

One person says that “this” is true, another says it’s not.

Truth cannot therefore possibly be determined by any one human being, or even a group for that matter.

IS there such a thing then as absolute truth?  A resounding YES!  How can we determine what is without a doubt truth, especially in today’s woke and fairly psychotic world?  The answer is actually very simple.  God.  God IS truth.  If what is said or thought doesn’t line up with God’s Word (The Bible), then it’s NOT the truth, period.  There is NO such thing as “my truth,” or “your truth,” that’s a lie meant to divide us all.  It is not after all, divided we stand, and together we fall.

In Psalm 119 we read this: “The sum of thy word is truth; And every one of thy righteous ordinances endureth for ever.”  Psalm 119:160 (ASV)

The entire Word of God IS truth, the same certainly cannot be claimed of man.

Jesus proclaimed that His Father’s word was truth: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”  John 17:17

Jesus proclaimed that He is the truth: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”  John 14:6

Truth came by Jesus: “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”  John 1:17

The TRUTH sets us free: “31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  John 8:31-32

Those who suppress the truth, work against the truth, seeking to undermine what is good and right: “ For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;”  Romans 1:18

Jesus declares that all those who believe the truth, will listen to His voice: “Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”  John 18:37

Pilate immediately after Jesus’s statement in the above verse questions what truth is, I believe this was influenced by Satan, as are many today, many indirectly, but the result is still the same.

All this is not to say that people consistently and constantly lie.  People will state what they perceive to be true, this is not the same as lying.  A scientist will state what his or her research shows to them to be true, this is their perception of reality as they see it, they are not lying, unless they of course misrepresent the facts.

This doctor says “this” is what is wrong, another doctor says no, “this” is what is wrong.  Who’s distorting the truth here?  Again, each person is stating what they see as the truth based on the information that they have in front of them, this does not mean one of them is lying.

In other words, some things are debatable without necessarily going against the truth.

That being said, most things, the important things in life are NOT debatable.  Truth is as defined by God, NOT man.  How we are to live life is well defined by the Bible, not by our own pernicious whims.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”  Jeremiah 17:9

Absolute truth is what lines up with the Bible.  God and the Bible are dependable, men are not.
