Was ABC Justified in Cancelling Roseanne Barr’s Show – or is This Politically Motivated Activism and/or Character Assassination?
It seems that in this day and age, people are forgetting exactly what the First Amendment actually says or was intended to accomplish when it was drafted. It clearly state, “Congress shall make no law……”; and the intent was to give the citizens of this country the freedom to worship according to the dictates of their own heart and conscience, to allow someone to speak their opinions without being limited or threatened by the government in any way, the right to assemble peaceably to hold a rally or protest that could speak out against government policies or practices, and the right for the press to publish whatever they choose to about the government. Such things were not the case in England, where a negative opinion expressed toward the government was seen as disloyal to the Crown and subversive. But someone once said that freedom of speech, or more accurately, freedom of the press, begins and ends with the one that owns the press. Facebook is a private company; not owned or controlled by the government, and as such is not a part of “Congress” They have their own rights to allow whatever content they choose on their property; which is the website. If we are to be Americans, then we must allow for the Constitution to stand even if it works against our ideals, beliefs, and opinions; and not try to work against it when things don’t go the way we want them to.
